Elementary Summer Assistance Program

The Francis Howell School District is again providing an elementary intervention program designed for students in grades K-4, in need of additional reading assistance. Students will be identified based on their reading levels, a standardized reading assessment score and teacher input. Students are then invited to participate in the program. Enrollment in this program is limited.  Parents will be contacted by mail the week of April 14 if their child is receiving an invitation.

The program will run from June 9 - June 27, 2014. Students will be assigned to a summer school location. School buildings being utilized this summer include John Weldon Elementary and Castlio Elementary.

John Weldon Elementary – 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Castlio Elementary – 9:15 AM – 3:45 PM

Transportation will be provided within district boundaries to students selected for the program.

Middle School READ 180 Reading Assistance Program

The Francis Howell School District will be providing a middle school reading assistance program designed to focus on improving the reading levels of students in need of assistance. Students identified as being in most need of additional reading assistance will be invited. Parents will be contacted by mail the week of April 14 if their child is receiving an invitation.


The program will run June 9 – 27, 2014 and will be held at Francis Howell North High School from 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM.

Transportation will be provided and must be requested on the enrollment form.

Middle School READ 180 Reading Assistance Program –

Middle School Credit Recovery
        

Students in grades 6-7-8 may need to attend the Middle School Credit Recovery program.  Students who fail one of the 4 core subjects of English Language Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies enroll for the courses they need, based on their grades and principal recommendation.

This program covers the main concepts taught throughout the school year.  Students will be notified through their school if they need to attend.

Each week a different content area will be covered.
Session 1 – Math – June 9 – 13, 2014

Session 2 – English Language Arts – June 16 – 20, 2014

Session 3 – Science and Social Studies – June 23 – 27, 2014

All sessions start at 8:00 am and end at 2:30 PM. Transportation will be provided within district boundaries, but must be requested by filling out the Transportation Request Form contained in the information packet and returned prior to the registration deadline. Enrollment dates will begin the week of March 31, 2014 and ends May 23, 2014.

Middle School EWS Summer Success Class

A new program will be added in the summer of 2014.  Once middle school students get to high school, some have a difficult time in high school. Using a students’ history of attendance, grades and discipline, identified students will be invited to attend a 10-day session held within two weeks of the beginning of the new school year.  Efforts of the program will be to provide those students who attend a head start on the upcoming school year. Curriculum content will expose the student to some of the topics to be covered. Additional supports could include the addition of mentors and study skills. Parents will be notified by mail the week of April 14 if their child is invited. Enrollment will close May 23.

The Summer Success Class will run for 10 days, July 14 - 25, 2014. There is no cost to the student and transportation will be provided within district boundaries if requested at the time of enrollment.

High School Credit Recovery

High school students have the opportunity to recover 1 full credit (two 0.5 credits) in the summer Credit Recovery program. Students enroll based on credit recovery needs.  Students attend 10 days for 6 hours per day to recover each 0.5 credit course.

Session 1 – June 5 – June 18, 2014 – 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM (Registration Deadline May 16, 2014)

Session 2 – June 19 – July 2, 2014 – 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM (Registration Deadline June 6, 2014)
(30 minute lunch break - students remain on campus)

Enrollment will open on March 31, 2014.

Transportation will be provided within district boundaries, but must be requested by filling out the Transportation Request Form contained in the information packet and returned prior to the registration deadline.

High School Credit Enrichment

Students completing grades 8 – 11 by the summer of 2014 may enroll in credit enrichment classes to earn up to 1 credit. Classes include Health, Personal Finance, Team Sports and others. These will be shared in the enrollment handbook which will be distributed the week of March 31, 2014. Registration deadline is May 16, 2014.

Students attend for three hours per day for each enrichment class, from June 5 to July 2, 2014.

AM Session – 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
PM Session – 11:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Transportation will be provided within district boundaries, but must be requested by filling out the Transportation Request Form contained in the information packet and returned prior to the registration deadline. Transportation can only be provided at the beginning and end of the school day. There is no bus service at the mid-day break in the schedule.

STEM Camps (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

STEM Camps Return for Third Year

Elementary - Francis Howell School District is continuing the elementary summer STEM Camps for students who have just completed grades 3, 4, or 5. Students with a high level of interest in STEM areas are encouraged to apply.

The program will consist of a four day camp that will be hands-on, activity-based and fun. LEGO Mindstorm Robotic kits and age appropriate programming will be a part of the activities held during the camp. There is no cost to students. Transportation is not provided to this four day camp.

Week 1: June 23 – 26, 2014 – Independence Elementary
Week 2: July 7 – 10, 2014 - Independence Elementary
Week 3: July 14 – 17, 2014 – Warren Elementary
Week 4: July 21 – 24, 2014 – Warren Elementary

All camps run from 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM.

Enrollment for this summer has been completed. Students were selected by a lottery from those who enrolled. Enrollment opened Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 9:00 AM and closed midnight Sunday, March 16, 2014.  All who enroll will receive notification on results of lottery shortly after enrollment closes.
      

Middle School – Francis Howell School District is also continuing the middle school summer STEM Camps for students who have just completed grades 6, 7 or 8. Students with a high level of interest in STEM are encouraged to apply.

The program will consist of a five day camp that will be hands-on, activity-based and fun. Programming this year will include robotics as well as other STEM related activities. There is no cost to students. Transportation is not provided to this five day camp.

Week 1: June 16 – 20, 2014 – FHC PLTW Lab, FHH PLTW Lab, FHN PLTW Lab (Project Lead the Way)
A second week may be scheduled in staffing needs can be met.

Week 2: June 23 – 27, 2014 - FHC PLTW Lab, FHH PLTW Lab, FHN PLTW Lab (Project Lead the Way)

All camps run from 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM.
