School Nutrition Week

School Nutrition employees play an active role in the school day for most District students. Preparing well-balanced meals that meet strict federal guidelines isn’t easy. But these individuals manage to do that every day, and sometimes twice a day! Francis Howell School District celebrates these food service workers during School Nutrition Employee Week May 4 - 8, 2020. FHSD thanks those who don an apron to make a difference in the cafeteria.

Sodexo, the District’s food service provider, serves approximately 50,000 lunches in FHSD during a typical school week. Despite closed buildings and students learning from home, some FHSD nutrition employees still can’t keep away. Approximately 15 staffers, like FHN Cafeteria Lead Becky Holtkamp, have been on the frontline, volunteering their time to ensure that students in need have food to eat.

“During the school closures, some kitchens have remained production sites for our FHSD families,” said Food Service Manager and District Chef Karin Mann. “Our Sodexo employees have been working hard every week to help feed our students alongside District employees. Boxes of food have been assembled, with instructions for food safety, date clarifications, and I have included written recipes for ideas on using items in the boxes."

“We know that there are many students who rely on the school meal program, sometimes for their only meals for the day,” said Holtkamp. “We worry about that when school is closed, and that makes this program all the more important. Feeding and caring for our students is always our number one priority, and that feels even more important now.”

Times are a little more hectic than usual, and the new normal isn’t that normal. But even in times of uncertainty, FHSD families can count on school nutrition employees to keep their bellies and their hearts full. Individuals can also help by donating to the FHSD Backpack Food Program, which distributes meal packages to FHSD families in need.
