Kristen Johnson,
English Language Arts teacher at Francis Howell North High School, was selected as the 2021-22 District Teacher of the Year for the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).

“Kristen is a highly effective and involved teacher who uses strong instructional strategies that engage all of her students at high levels. More importantly, though, she builds strong and supportive relationships with her students. They truly care for her because they see how strongly she cares for them,” said Dr. Lucas Lammers, FHN principal. “I can think of no better testament to this than the fact that multiple students in the classroom were crying when they saw her win this recognition. Kristen’s impact extends out of the classroom, also, where she helps to lead out Knights of the Round Table program. Kristen is a very deserving recipient and we are proud to call her a Knight!”

Johnson began her teaching career 13 years ago at Francis Howell North, but she says if you ask her family, they’ll say, “Kristen has always been a teacher.” She is the oldest of 13 cousins, and they spent their summers “in Mrs. Johnson’s class.” Johnson’s high school English teacher pushed her to grow and find her potential as an educator.

Not only does Johnson help her students to succeed every day, she also helps her colleagues reach their full potential. As part of the FHSD Mentoring Program, she has passed her passion for education and leadership along to many other teachers.

“My family, students, department, colleagues and administrators have always been there to push me, to celebrate with me and to console me,” said Johnson. “Those relationships are the foundation of all good things that happen in my classroom.”

Johnson completed a master’s degree in Secondary Education in 2008 and says she continues to learn every day in her classroom.

Johnson says she was surprised and honored to be named the FHSD Teacher of the Year, although she is no stranger to recognition. She was named the Francis Howell North Staff Member of the Month in the months of January 2022, October 2020 and December 2019. Most recently, Johnson was named the 2021-2022 Francis Howell North Teacher of the Year.

“I am thankful for this honor because teaching is important to me. I am lucky to have the best students who make it impossible not to be motivated,” she said. “If there’s ever been a single good thing I’ve done, it’s because someone else showed me the way. I hope to be the same for the students I see daily.”

Johnson will be honored, along with each school’s Teacher of the Year and Howell of Fame Award winners at the annual Howell of Fame Awards Ceremony on May 23, 2022.
