Recess is usually the most anticipated time of the day for students. However, for those who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities, it can be a challenging time of the day. In order to provide a more inclusive playground experience for all students, Henderson Elementary recently partnered with their PTO to purchase a LAMP Core Word Communication Board for their outdoor space.

LAMP (Language Acquisition through Motor Planning) is a therapeutic approach that provides individuals with a method to express themselves independently by pressing buttons on a speech-generating device. This approach allows students to communicate their thoughts and needs, but also improve their motor skills, vocabulary, and auditory and sensory processing.

LAMP Core Word Communication Board“Students have a hard time on the playground when they use an iPad to communicate, since it’s hard to run around with a device,” shared Principal Lisa Bohrmann.

The Communication Board provides an alternative and convenient way for students to communicate while playing outside. Instead of pressing buttons, students can simply point to words and symbols on the board. Henderson eventually plans to extend LAMP words throughout the playground by adding them to various equipment.

“These students have so many other obstacles that they are trying to overcome and the playground shouldn’t be one of them,” said Bohrmann. Even though it’s harder for them to talk, we hope this helps them feel like they can still play and have fun.”
