Special Olympics Basketball Tournament 2018

Sports don’t just give participants the chance to experience the thrill of victory. They also allow the community to come together to support each other – to be a part of something bigger and more important than just their personal needs. A perfect example is the annual Francis Howell Special Olympics (FHSO) Basketball Tournament. This special event allows athletes of all abilities the opportunity to play on a team in front of their friends and family.

The highly anticipated tournament is set for Saturday, Dec. 11 at Francis Howell Central High School. The FHSO began hosting the tournament in 2014. Since then, hundreds of competitors and volunteers have participated.

“It means so much that all of these amazing athletes are be able to participate. We have 18 teams participating from all over the St. Louis area,” said FHSO Director Eddie Mulholland. “This is going to be a great day that everybody has been looking forward to. I am so thankful for all of the volunteers and am thrilled the District can host this wonderful event.”

Francis Howell student volunteers will run the “Olympic Victory Village,” which will be full of games, food, and entertainment for all of the athletes to enjoy while not on the court.

The Community Resource Fair will take place alongside the Francis Howell Special Olympics Annual Basketball Tournament. Combining the Community Resource Fair and Special Olympics competition will allow individuals to connect with the important resources in our community.

The Community Resource Fair has been a tradition of the Francis Howell School District for almost a decade. The event's objective is to connect and educate as many individuals with our community's resources. The event has averaged over 40 vendors dedicated to serving people of all ages and specializing in recreation/leisure, mental health, behavior supports, and post-secondary transition.

Francis Howell Special Olympics holds several events throughout the year, including the annual softball tournament each spring.

The Francis Howell Special Olympics Annual Basketball Tournament has been a huge success in attracting hundreds of participants and spectators.

The opening ceremony will begin at 12:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at Francis Howell Central High School.
