Erica Bowen, a paraprofessional at Hollenbeck Middle School, was named Paraprofessional of the Year by the 2021-22 Missouri Council for Exceptional Children. The award recognizes paraprofessionals for their “exemplary practice of assisting students with disabilities.”

Bowen has been working with the District Essentials Skills program at Hollenbeck since 2018. She is known by her colleagues to be reliable and responsible, always following directives, sharing ideas and volunteering her time where needed.

“She is kind and caring, calm and consistent when working with students. She builds strong relationships with our most difficult students, and is respectful to her co-workers,” said Janette Lenk, a Special Education teacher at Hollenbeck.

Bowen has made a positive impact on her students and the students have done the same for her.

“I love the excitement in kids when they learn something new and they finally understand it for the first time,” said Bowen.

This award serves as a testament that Bowen is in the right field. While Bowen currently works as a paraprofessional, she is in the process of completing her Master’s degree and earning a teaching certificate.

“She is an asset to our school and district,” said Lenk. “She will make an excellent special educator once she has completed her degree and certification.”

Congratulations on the great achievement, Erica, and thank you for all that you do!
