Alicia Arter wins Support Staff of the Year Award

Alicia Arter,
an occupational therapist at John Weldon Elementary School, was selected as the 2021-22 Support Staff Employee of the Year for the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).

“It is a great honor to be recognized. It is nice to work at John Weldon and for a district that recognizes the hard work of their staff members,” Alicia Arter said. “There are so many reasons why I love to work at John Weldon. The supportive co-workers, the staff members are truly here to help students.”

Arter joined John Weldon as an Occupational Therapist two years ago. She works with students in Kindergarten to fifth-grade classes. Arter sees the potential of every student and provides developmentally appropriate and resourceful tools to meet their needs. In addition to working directly with students, Arter also works with classroom teachers to ensure their students have the support to reach their full potential.

“Alicia is innovative, a problem-solver and a team player in her role. She is always viewing the student from the perspective of what they can do and how they can do it with more success,” said Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Denise Voss. “Her level of involvement is superior and she is a wonderful asset to the John Weldon building and FHSD as a whole.”

Arter says that teachers have been willing to implement strategies and suggestions she made, even if her idea was a little “outside of the box.”  She said she feels great pride in making a difference in students’ lives.

“I cannot say enough about Alicia Arter! She works very closely with all teachers to give advice and help with students in our classrooms. She comes in and gives us activities and suggestions that will help with core strength, hand strength, pencil grip and much more,” teacher Jennifer Hoppe said. ”She has a full caseload, but still finds time to help others without hesitation. She is deserving of this award without a doubt!”

Principal Bryan Howse echoed these sentiments.

“Alicia is not only a wonderful occupational therapist, but an impact employee. She has really helped our entire school to make strides in the area of caring for the whole child.  Alicia leads by example and is not one to want attention for all of her hard work and dedication to our John Weldon students,” said Principal Bryan Howse. “We are so fortunate to have Alicia on our team here at John Weldon.”

Arter says she feels honored to be recognized by her colleagues and the administration for her hard work. She will be celebrated, along with each school’s Support Staff Employee of the Year and Howell of Fame Award winners at the annual Howell of Fame Awards Ceremony on May 23, 2022.
