Mask Update - February 4, 2022

If you have been tracking COVID-19 cases in our District, you likely noticed that cases have been declining over the last two weeks. As of today, there are fewer than 20 known positive cases among nearly 20,000 students and staff. We will continue to monitor the data but are happy to report that FHSD has a significantly lower number of positive cases than when students returned from Winter Break last month.
You may also recall that the FHSD Board of Education approved new mask guidelines at their Jan. 20, 2022 Board meeting that would take effect in February.
This is a reminder that beginning Monday, Feb. 7, masks will be optional at all FHSD schools and buildings.
If the number of positive COVID-19 cases in a particular building meets or exceeds 3% of the building population of students and staff for three consecutive school days, a temporary mask requirement may be implemented for just that building.
Here are some additional things to note:
  • BUSES - Masks continue to be required on school buses due to a federal transportation order.
  • NEW DASHBOARD FORMAT The COVID-19 Dashboard has been updated to include the positivity rate and total population (students and staff) for each school building. Positivity rate is calculated by dividing the number of positive students and staff by the total population of students and staff in that building.
  • DASHBOARD UPDATES The dashboard is updated daily. Active case numbers fluctuate throughout the day. Cases that have resolved are removed from the Active Cases dashboard each morning, so numbers are almost always lower in the first half of the day, then increase throughout the afternoon as more cases are identified and added to the dashboard.

  • NOTIFICATION If a building reaches a positivity rate of 3% and remains there for two days, we will send an email notification to staff and families associated with that building. The communication will include a reminder that if the building remains at a positivity rate of 3% or higher for another day, a temporary mask requirement would be implemented. The purpose of this "warning" email is to give families time to prepare for a possible change in mask requirements. An additional communication would be sent if and when the mask requirement is triggered for that building. (Buildings with a total population under 400 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis since the 3% threshold represents only a few students and staff.)

TEMPORARY MASK REQUIREMENT
- If a temporary mask requirement is reinstated for a particular building, it would be in effect for 10 school days. On the 10th school day, the number of positive cases would be reviewed. If the number continues to meet or exceed 3% of the building population of students and staff, the mask requirement would remain in place for an additional 5 days. The number of cases would then be reviewed on every fifth day thereafter, with the mask requirement being lifted when the number of positive cases is below 3% on any fifth day.

Thank you, as always, for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate changing pandemic conditions.
