For 65 years, hundreds of volunteers have given their time and talents to help with Old Newsboys Day. The event is held annually the Thursday before Thanksgiving. Volunteers stand on St. Louis-area street corners waving newspapers and collecting donations. This year’s helpers were up with the sun. They started just before 5 o’clock Thursday morning. At its October meeting, the FHSD Board of Education approved a revised 2021-22 school year calendar that reflects changes to snow days for the current school year. The first three snow days will be made up (consistent with our past practice); the next four snow days will not have to be made up due to extra instructional time in the calendar. In the unlikely event that the District experiences more than seven snow days, snow days 8, 9, and 10 will be added to the end of the school year.  Read more about Changes to snow days for 2021-22

The District is excited about the creation of a new Academic Advisory committee that will gather stakeholder input and feedback on the work of the academic department, primarily related to curriculum development. This group of 37 individuals includes 3 staff members, 3 community members, 1 student, and 2 alternates for the North, Central, and South regions of our district. In October, Independence Elementary was named to Saint Louis University’s Student Growth Top 20 list, coming in at #8 in the state for student learning growth in English Language Arts. Recess is usually the most anticipated time of the day for students. However, for those who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities, it can be a challenging time of the day. Salome Cummins, a fifth grader at Warren Elementary School, began summer break this year in the most fitting way - practicing her piano skills, building a robot named Charlie at Robotics camp, and plunging into the world of Harry Potter, her favorite book series.
