FHSD Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week - May 4 - 8, 2020

Students in FHSD will always remember the teachers they had the year the world stayed home. They were the teachers that served as familiar faces and voices in a not so familiar situation. They tackled the world of virtual learning in short order so that their students could continue their education. They adjusted their personal lives with their professional lives as they brought their computers and paperwork home. If there is a silver lining to the pandemic, it is a much greater public appreciation for our teachers and the work they do day in and day out for our students.

For 2019 District Teacher of the Year Rachael Wilcox, the students are the reason she shows up for work each day. "They are the single best part of our job - every high five, hug, ah-ha moment, and smile makes this the best job in the world," said Wilcox. While Rachael is unable to teach her students in person these days, she and her colleagues continue to show up for students - virtually.

"Teachers have demonstrated what has always been true. They will do anything to help their students succeed," said Wilcox. Our District educators have more than stepped up to the challenges that COVID-19 has presented. They lead with relationships at the center of all decisions and have worked tirelessly to meet each student's needs. They have also engaged in self-directed Professional Development to ensure that students have engaging instructional lessons.

"Being in a position to change the trajectory of students' lives through the power of learning combined with relationships makes teaching a profession like no other," said 2020 District Teacher of the Year Dione Anderson. The online learning environment is teaching us all valuable lessons in flexibility, creativity, and patience. Students are also learning about the importance of community and perseverance, and our teachers are at the forefront of those messages.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, FHSD is celebrating our wonderful educators for their dedication to our students and their constant reminder that FHSD is always "better together."
