Mentors4College Guides Students Through College Application Process

FHSD will be partnering with Mentors4College, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to high school students during their college search. This new partnership aligns with Goal One: Life College, Career, and Success of the District’s new strategic plan. Mentors4College is a no-cost program that will be offered to any high school student in the District.

“Mentors4College partners with area schools to identify local parents and community members with a passion to help students and families navigate the college search, application, and financial aid process,” said Director of Secondary Education Dr. Lucas Lammers. “We are excited to provide this opportunity to help students and families gain access to college.  We are equally excited because this provides yet another opportunity to build community partnerships that promote student success.”

The screening and application process will help ensure that the best student/family and mentor match is made. FHSD students interested in pursuing a career in the nursing program could potentially get matched with a licensed nurse or a parent of a college student currently in that field. The hope is that mentors will provide guidance through the college and secondary institution process not only to the student but also to families, having already worked through the search/application/financial aid steps. The mentor often serves as an unbiased third-party mediator and can provide guidance to family members.

“These mentors are professionally trained by the Mentors4College organization on how to conduct regular, effective meetings with participating students and families to ensure that they are completing all of the important steps of the college/career search and application process at the right time, that they are asking all of the ‘right’ questions when selecting a college and/or career, and that they are confident about successfully navigating the financial aid process,” said College and Career Specialist Katie Vargas.

The Mentors4College program will open to all high school students during the 2019-20 school year. Interested students should contact their school counselor for additional information. Students can also be referred to the program by a teacher.
