FHSD Celebrates National Library Week

A Learning Commons is like an educational universe that introduces students to new worlds full of adventure and learning. As part of National Library Week, April 20 – 24, FHSD will celebrate and honor our wonderful Library Media Specialists (LMS), who share the keys to some of the most magical worlds.

The role of the Library Media Specialist is more crucial and unique than ever before in the digital age. As students conduct research and work on projects, the LMS teaches them important skills, such as where to find the appropriate resources and how to evaluate sources for bias. “Students need librarians to help them explore the internet with a critical eye,” said Independence LMS Felicia Hinds-Thapa. “Everyone who accesses the internet is a digital citizen, and the librarian’s role is to help students become good digital citizens.”

During this time of social distancing, our Library Media Specialists have been vital as they answer questions regarding technology, eBooks, audiobooks, copyright rules, and more. “As our world changes, the LMS is constantly adapting and changing as well to be ready to help as needed,” said FHSD Learning Commons Content Leader Andrea Head.

Library Media Specialists are dedicated to promoting the love of learning. “The most rewarding part of my position is when a child finally finds something they are passionate about, whether it’s the perfect book or a challenging coding app, and they report back to me their newfound love,” shared Hinds-Thapa.

Sometimes a simple turn of a page can change a student’s whole perspective on learning. As we celebrate National Library Week, join FHSD in saying thank you to our Learning Commons gatekeepers for providing our students with some of the greatest adventures!
