Many people around the globe face hunger and food insecurity on a daily basis. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 795 million people around the world suffered from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016. That’s approximately one in nine people.

Those funds helped pay for meals that were packed in an assembly line fashion with students, parents, and staff members filling baggies side by side. Bags are vacuumed sealed and have a long shelf life. By the end of the day, over 200 Fairmount volunteers had packed 103 boxes with 22,248 meals. The meals cost approximately 30 cents each and Kids Against Hunger oversees the entire process, from packing to delivery.

Students write on boxes at the Kids Against Hunger event“Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit humanitarian organization with a mission to provide fully nutritious food to impoverished children and families around the world… and around the corner,” said first grade teacher Brianna Griffin. “The goal of the organization is for the meals to provide a stable nutritional base from which the recipient families can move their families from starvation or food insecurity to self-sufficiency.”

To recap the event, watch the Kids Against Hunger video put together by the Fairmount PTO.

Families in the District who qualify are encouraged to take part in the Free and Reduced Priced Meal Benefits and the FHSD Mobile Market. Those interested in helping FHSD students in need can also donate to the Lunch Heroes Program.
