Gifted Education

Federal Definition

“Gifted and talented children are those identified by professionally qualified persons who by virtue of outstanding abilities are capable of high performance. These are children who require differentiated educational programs and are serviced beyond those normally provided by the regular school program in order to realize their contribution to self and society.”

The Gifted Child

“For the purpose of education, gifted children are those students in a given school or school district who are exceptional by virtue of markedly greater than average potential or ability in some area of human activity generally considered to be the province of the educational system and whose exceptionality engenders special-educational needs that are not being met adequately by the regular core curriculum.”  (Borland, 1989)
