Notification Procedure for Positive Cases

Administrators in all school buildings have been trained in the contact-tracing process. When we are notified of a positive case within the building, we determine when the individual was last at school, when their symptoms began, when they were tested for COVID-19, and when they received the positive test result. We then print their class schedule (if a student) or get a copy of their calendar (if staff). We collect appropriate seating charts and identify other individuals this person may have come into contact with during their infectious period, including special classes, pull-out supports, bus, extracurriculars, recess, morning and dismissal waiting periods, etc. Assigned seats are a non-negotiable in class, during lunch, and on the bus in order to successfully contact trace.

We use this information to create a list of “contacts” and “close contacts” (within 6 feet of the COVID-positive individual for more than 15 minutes). Only close contacts are required to quarantine.

A school administrator will call the families of all close contacts and inform them that their student needs to quarantine for 14 days. Final guidance on the return date for students or staff who are in isolation or quarantine will come from the county department of health.

Other contacts who may have been in the same classroom or general vicinity – but not within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes – will receive an email communication from a school administrator, informing them that there was a positive case in their child’s classroom, bus, or other activity. No names will be shared. They will be advised to monitor their student for possible symptoms, but continue sending their student to school. All building staff will receive a copy of the communication to families.

If the District is notified of a positive test result after the 14-day quarantine window for any close contacts has passed (and there has been no close contact within that 14-day timeframe) a notification letter will not be sent.

How you can help:

  • Keep your student at home if they experience any symptoms associated with COVID-19, or have been recently tested for COVID-19 and are awaiting the test result. Call your school to report the absence.
  • Help your student understand the importance of following the health and safety protocols the District has put in place. This includes correct mask wearing, regular handwashing, staying in assigned seats, and practicing physical distancing.
  • If your student tests positive for COVID-19, notify the school principal immediately so that contact tracing can begin. Provide accurate and thorough information about your student’s contacts during their infectious period (up to 2 days before symptoms appeared or before they got tested).
