Great by 8

A key component of the program is driven by volunteers in the Francis Howell community. Volunteers are asked to dedicate one hour a week (during school hours) to tutor students in a one-on-one small group setting, to increase students’ proficiency and mastery of targeted skill sets. Volunteers will help students with sight words, letter recognition, sounds, handwriting, and assist with students’ individual needs. Beginning with kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students, volunteers will start tutoring at Harvest Ridge Elementary and Central Elementary.

For early intervention to be successful, volunteers are asked to work with kids on a consistent and frequent basis, be available once a week for approximately 15– 20 minutes, connect with students and develop trusting relationships, have an approved
FHSD volunteer status, and complete the Great by 8 training.

Mary Jo Griffin, Director of Tuition Based Programs and Parent Involvement, says the Great by 8 program is a new and exciting volunteer opportunity, allowing people in the Francis Howell community to use their individual expertise to help students. Great by 8 will benefit students by building positive self-esteem, improving academic achievement over time, as well as giving students individual time with a caring and trusting adult.

If you are interested in enhancing student learning and supporting the Great by 8 initiative  and would like more information or would like to attend a training session, please contact the Francis Howell School District at 636-851-4045.

Great by 8 Scheduled Training Dates:
The Francis Howell School District has implemented a new and exciting initiative called, Great by 8, which is designed to increase and improve student reading proficiency by age eight.

The Great by 8 program was established after a task force was created, which examined reading intervention and volunteering systems in the District. The goal of the program is to improve reading literacy scores of students before entering third grade. Literacy scores are measured on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP), which test students’ progress toward mastery of the Missouri Show-Me Standards. In an effort to help students develop core foundational learning in literacy and increase reading proficiency, the Great by 8 program was established as a volunteer initiative.
