Enrollment - New Students

Enrolling with Francis Howell School District

To enroll a student in FHSD, call the school in your attendance area and make an appointment for registration. The student and parent/guardian must reside within the FHSD boundaries. Assignment of students to schools is based upon attendance areas established by the Board of Education. Click here to complete online enrollment.

Registration Requirements

In compliance with Missouri laws, children must be five years of age before Aug. 1 to enroll in kindergarten. No early assessments will be administered. It is very important that all children be registered prior to entering kindergarten in August. A residency/enrollment checklist is available for all required information that you will need to register your child for kindergarten.

Student Screening

The FHSD recommends that all children be screened after age three and prior to entering Kindergarten. This screening examines three areas of development: motor, concepts, and language. The children will also have an opportunity for vision and hearing screenings. There is no cost for this screening. The entire process – screening and parent conferences – takes one to one and a half hours.

To make an appointment to have your child screened, please call one of the Early Childhood Family Education Centers: Hackmann Road, 636-851-6200; Central School Road, 636-851-6400; or Meadows Parkway, 636-851-6000. Appointment hours are Monday through Friday beginning at 8:30 AM. Saturday and evening screenings are available by appointment.

Kindergarten Students

Any child whose fifth birthday occurs before Aug. 1, is eligible to attend Kindergarten during that same calendar year or to summer school prior to the student's regular term. Children who have started kindergarten out of the State of Missouri shall not be placed permanently in a grade until the student can be evaluated by the principal/designee or other appropriate staff member. Click here for additional information about Kindergarten enrollment.

First Grade Students

Any child whose sixth birthday occurs before Aug. 1, is eligible to attend First Grade during that same calendar year. Students who have completed public school kindergarten in Kansas City or a St. Louis Metropolitan Area School District are eligible to attend First Grade. Students who have completed public school Kindergarten outside the State of Missouri are eligible to attend First Grade. A document stating the date of birth will be required to verify age. The verification document can be a birth certificate, baptismal record, hospital record, county court record of birth, or other documents that state the date of birth.

*Additional forms may need to be completed at the school your child will attend.

Military Dependents

Military dependents who have completed an accredited kindergarten or kindergarten program in another state may enter kindergarten or first grade regardless of age. The District will facilitate the timely enrollment of children of military families and will ensure that they are not placed at a disadvantage due to difficulty in their transfer of education records from the previous school district(s) or variations in entrance legal requirements.
