In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), our activities directors and coaches don’t just develop great student-athletes, they develop great leaders and community members as well. For instance, Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School dispatched a delegation of a few of their top student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to the MSHSAA Sportsmanship Summit, on June 9, at Jefferson City High School. For a School Resource Officer (SRO), there is one priority – the safety of students and staff. They observe, and they protect. One observation made by an SRO, Officer Mike Stock at Barnwell Middle, just happened to save someone’s life. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is always a busy place, not just during the school year. There are more than 2,000 employees in the District, and almost 20 percent of them work a 12-month schedule. “The District does not shut down over the summer,” said FHSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris, “quite the contrary. Educating 18,000 students is a year-round, full-time job. In addition to preparing the high quality education our students deserve for 2017-18, we have also started working on our next five-year strategic plan, and our community will have the opportunity to be part of that process this fall.”   Read more about What Happens in FHSD Over the Summer?

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is committed to providing engaging and enriching camp opportunities to students over the summer months. Two of the most popular are the elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and middle school STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) camps. On May 11, 2016, a severe thunderstorm with large hail caused significant damage throughout the Francis Howell School District. The roofs of 15 different District buildings suffered damage, and in many cases the entire roof structure is in need of repair.   Read more about Storm Damage = New Roofs

At Francis Howell High School (FHHS), students and staff adhere to a motto – R.I.S.E., focusing on Respect, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Excellence. Excellence and sportsmanship in games and matches are certainly desired, but what is more important to the FHHS Vikings is how they meet the other two requisites, respect and integrity. During the 2016-17 school year, Howell activities, clubs, and sports were involved in the community through outreach and fundraising efforts to benefit multiple charities. On Saturday, May 27, Francis Howell High School (FHHS) senior Maddi Leigh took to the rain-soaked track at the Missouri State High School Track & Field Championships for the last time in her stellar athletic career, a day she and the Viking community will remember. Her All-State medals were already in the double digits, but she came to accomplish one goal – to win a state championship. Through her perseverance and spirit, both hallmarks of her FHHS career, she has excelled on the field and off. In case you missed it, Laraya Griffith never missed out. Laraya just graduated from Francis Howell North (FHN) High School, and she never missed a thing. Literally. She had perfect attendance in school, from the first day of kindergarten through the last day of high school. Saeger Middle School teacher Matthew Van Horn traveled to George Washington’s (yes, that George Washington) Mount Vernon to facilitate a four-day, residential professional development program from March 30 to April 2, 2017. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and play in a safe environment, including those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Some students were born without the gift of hearing, and some have lost it over time. But all of these students get to live and learn like every other kid, thanks to the support of many great special educators in FHSD. In addition to those signing ceremonies, Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School wanted to honor students, who are signing up to join branches of the military and are making a commitment to serve their country. There are a few repeat winners among the annual Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Journalism Award honorees, such as HBO for their documentaries, and The New Yorker for print stories. But one repeat-winner was not a New York Times author, or a documentary auteur. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is proud to announce that the District and school websites will soon have a new and improved look. FHSD has signed a new contract agreement with the current website vendor, SchoolMessenger, to provide a new website template for all 25 District websites, including Vacation Station and the employee intranet. Three high school seniors from the Francis Howell School District have been selected for recognition as part of the 2017 Missouri Scholars 100, a program that honors 100 of Missouri’s highest achieving students. James Dohrman and Yuri Takenaka from Francis Howell North, as well as Rachel Stepanek from Francis Howell Central, were among the elite students selected this year. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is proud to announce that two more FHSD students have scored a 36 on the ACT test. Alex Juan from Francis Howell Central (FHC) and Stephanie Monson from Francis Howell North (FHN) are both part of a very select group. Three Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high school students, representing Lewis & Clark Career Center at the SkillsUSA Missouri State Leadership and Skills Conference in Linn, Missouri from April 6-8, medaled in their respective competitions. Allison Mayfield from Francis Howell Central (FHC), a student in the Health Occupations program at Lewis & Clark, will move on to the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June after taking first place in the Basic Health Care competition. Francis Howell North (FHN) High School’s Jacob Lintner recently returned from the program’s latest conference with a special honor. Lintner was named the Journalism Education Association (JEA) Student Journalist of the Year for Missouri, and also finished as a runner-up in the national competition. Most of us have experienced periods where we must tighten our belts in order to afford the essentials. When that isn’t possible, it’s great to have a generous benefactor. Warren Elementary’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently stepped up to save the day, donating close to $35,000 in order to purchase necessary technology for the school and its students. Forty students from the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high schools will represent the District in the International DECA Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California, from April 26-29, 2017. This includes 23 students from Francis Howell High School (FHHS), 10 students from Francis Howell North (FHN), and 7 students from Francis Howell Central (FHC). The Francis Howell School District honored 231 graduating seniors from Francis Howell High (FHHS), Francis Howell Central (FHC), and Francis Howell North (FHN) high schools at a special luncheon held in their honor at Old Hickory Golf Club on Friday, April 7. The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) testing for students in the Francis Howell School District will take place during the month of April. MAP tests are mandated by the state, and are intended to help determine what a child knows and is able to do according to the expectations for his or her grade level. The Francis Howell School District is excited to announce the recipients of the 2017 Howell of Fame Awards, which celebrate the outstanding achievements of volunteers and staff. Media and journalism students in Francis Howell School District (FHSD) always seem to be making headlines. Students at all three high schools, as well as the programs they make so great, have been winning national awards and earning country-wide recognition for their work. Community members in FHSD know how great these students are, but now, thanks to Lindenwood University (LU) and their television department, a larger audience will know what FHSD media and fine arts students and programs have to offer. During the school year, the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) Board of Education invites an outstanding student to represent their peers at the monthly Board meeting. In March, the Board entertained a special guest, only the second middle school student to serve as the student Board representative. Mr. Justin Caringal, the son of Sennen and Faergals Caringal, is an eighth grader at Barnwell Middle School. Most teams dance together after winning a state championship – but for the Golden Girls of Francis Howell High School, dancing together as a team is what clinched the title for them. When Gateway2Change met last November, prominent local businesses and organizations outlined the challenges they face in the areas of social and cultural diversity and equity. At Francis Howell School District (FHSD), jumping is serious business, especially when it’s for a great cause! During the month of February, students at Fairmount Elementary participated in Jump Rope for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association (AHA). With the combined efforts of students, families, and staff, the school not only met their $8,000 goal, they more than doubled it and raised over $16,000 for the AHA. Fourteen Francis Howell School District students from Lewis & Clark Center have earned the right to compete at the SkillsUSA Missouri State Leadership and Skills Conference in Linn, Missouri from April 6-8. The Lewis & Clark Career Center provides career and technical education for St. Charles County juniors and seniors from all five school districts in St. Charles County. If a solution is going to be found for climate change, it will likely stem from conversations like those occurring in Sam Berendzen’s Environmental Science class at Francis Howell High School (FHHS). For their latest unit, students are making one-minute videos with proposed solutions on how to combat our changing climate and how to accommodate our growing population. Wednesday, February 1, 2017, is National Signing Day, the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play NCAA football. In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), it is a day to honor the student-athletes in all sports as they prepare for the next step in their academic and athletic careers. The Francis Howell School District provides a free developmental screening for 3-5 year-olds. It is recommended that all children are screened yearly, beginning at age 3 and prior to entering kindergarten. On Jan. 11, 2017, Francis Howell School District (FHSD) hosted its inaugural Job Fair for high school students, and the evening was a tremendous success. Thirty-two businesses and 357 students participated in an event that was the ideal introduction for students to the workforce. From practicing their interview and resume-writing skills to just learning how to dress to impress a potential employer, both students and area businesses got a return on their investment. Better-prepared students mean better employees, which means better business and better communities. In 2004, the Francis Howell School District began using Purchasing Cards (P-Cards) as another means of saving taxpayers money. A P‑Card is a commercial credit card that allows organizations to make electronic payments for a variety of business expenses. It is similar to a consumer credit card; however, the organization utilizing the P-Card must pay off the card in full each month. The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. The arts are an important part of education for so many reasons, and they enrich our lives in many ways. A program has been implemented by a theater group in St. Louis that enables area youth with physical, cognitive, and/or developmental delays to participate in musical theater arts, inspiring the Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School Drama Club to get involved. The Holidays are here, and it’s the time of year to be thankful. The students at Francis Howell Union (FHU) are dedicating their time to giving back, in addition to giving thanks. Together with the organization “Kids Against Hunger,” FHU students participated in a food packing event on Tuesday, Nov. 22. But not everyone has the resources to get their child the latest and greatest toys on the market. The United States Marine Corps began the Toys for Tots program in 1995 to foster a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters. Trauma specialists have begun production on a nationally-distributed training video for teachers, recording potential solutions to these issues. Students at two Francis Howell School District (FHSD) schools are getting the opportunity to participate by performing roles in the video. The Francis Howell Central High School (FHC) Varsity cheerleading squad made history on Saturday, Nov. 5, as they won the 2016 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championship in the “small-coed” division. On Election Day, November 8, 2016, voters in the Francis Howell School District failed to approve Proposition Howell, a 60-cent operating levy. The increased funding would have allowed the District to maintain high student academic achievement by reducing class sizes, improving safety, increasing technology, restoring tutoring, attracting and retaining high quality teachers, maintaining District facilities and maintaining existing bus transportation. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) today released the Annual Performance Report (APR) data for school districts around the state. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) scored 99.3% on the APR, part of the Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP 5). Now in its fourth year, MSIP 5 is a more rigorous evaluation tool for rating the performance of Missouri school districts. A total of 19 Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students have been recognized for their academic achievement by being named National Merit Commended Scholars and National Merit Semi-Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has released the 2016 Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) scores for all 518 school districts across the state. These scores include student achievement in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Saving lives is a great tradition at John Weldon Elementary, and during the 2015-16 school year this tradition had an impressive outcome. After the final bell sounds, after the last locker closes shut, and the last school bus rolls off the parking lot, that’s when a special group of people goes to work in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). Then it’s time for our diligent custodians and maintenance workers to roll up their sleeves to ensure a safe, clean and fully-functional learning and working environment for all FHSD students, teachers and staff. FHSD would not be the great District it is today without their efforts. Francis Howell Central High School (FHC) can add one more outstanding student to its list of successful 2016 graduates. Haley Clark is one of only five recipients in the country to receive the 2016 National Vision Inc. College Scholarship. Castlio students, and sisters, Nora Sage Spellman and Brielle Spellman are great examples of compassion and dedication, and they help prove that supporting a good cause is possible at any age. On Nov. 8, 2016, the Francis Howell School District voters will be asked to approve Prop Howell, a 60-cent operating levy increase. Graduating high school becomes an even more exciting life event when students not only finally receive their diploma, but also the news of winning a scholarship. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is partnering with community organizations and our internal professionals to offer Parent University, a morning of free sessions to equip families with new or additional skills, knowledge, and resources on a variety of topics related to raising happy, healthy, successful children. Parent University will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at Saeger Middle School in Cottleville. It’s an award created to honor sportsmanship and leadership in school. Independence Elementary, part of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) and a National School of Character, is never shy to show its philanthropic nature. The school’s staff, students, and parents have partnered many times to raise money for various charities, and have performed other service activities that have brightened the lives of so many around them. The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.   Read more about FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

Francis Howell High School’s Viking baseball team is still reveling over their fourth state championship in the program’s history, but the awards keep coming in. Specifically, head coach Tony Perkins, who’s been the team’s manager for more than twenty years, has been receiving recognition from not just area coaches, but those from around the entire nation. It’s something we’re getting used to when it comes to the Francis Howell High School (FHHS) baseball team – championships. The Vikings were state champs in 2003, 2011, 2013 and now 2016. But the baseball team isn’t the only winner among the Vikings’ sports programs. The boys soccer team also won a state championship last year, its first in school history. And there were final four finishes for wrestling and girls basketball as well.
