Summer School 2017

The Francis Howell School District Summer School Programs serves students entering grades K-12.  The programs include both remedial and enrichment classes, and there is no cost to attend any of the programs.  Summer school is fully funded through average daily attendance money from the state of Missouri which makes it possible for the district to offer these programs.

ELEMENTARY SUMMER SUCCESS PROGRAM

The Elementary Summer Success Program focuses on improving both reading and mathematics achievement.  Students are invited to participate in this program based on academic performance throughout the previous school year.  Requests for transportation must be received by May 5, 2017.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER SUCCESS PROGRAM

The Middle School Summer Success Program provides targeted interventions in reading or mathematics to students in need of reading or mathematics assistance.  Students will attend two blocks of intervention, and two blocks of elective choices each day.  It is worth noting that students whose selection of electives during the school year is limited will have the opportunity to enroll in elective classes during the summer program.  Elective choices available include:  Art, World Cultures and Languages, Music, Engineering by Design, and Family & Consumer Science.  Students are invited to participate in this program based on academic performance throughout the previous school year.  Requests for transportation must be received by May 5, 2017.

The High School Credit Advancement Program allows students who have completed grades 8 – 11 the opportunity to earn ½ or 1 credit towards graduation requirements.  Courses offered include:  Personal Finance (Online), Health (Online), Weightlifting, Team Sports, Introduction to Computer Applications, and ACT Prep.

The Elementary STEAM Summer Programs are 5-days each that blend together the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.  Each day will start with work on robotics.  There is a focus throughout the program on creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

The Middle School App Camp Summer Programs are 5-days each where students learn to create and market a mobile app.  Students will learn to construct a storyboard for their application idea, use programming languages to develop their app, and develop a marketing plan to make a pitch for their app.

The Early Warning System Summer Success Class provides students a head start on their upcoming freshman year.  Some entering high school students have a difficult time transitioning from middle school to high school.  Topics covered in this program include how to prepare for the pace of high school, getting involved in extra-curricular activities, and how to avoid the pitfalls that may freshmen experience during their time in high school.  Students our invited to attend this program based on attendance, grades, and discipline throughout middle school.

The Kindergarten Summer Success Program is designed to help entering kindergarten students feel more comfortable with their new school surroundings and routines.  The intended outcomes for this program include:  familiarizing students with their school, teaching everyday routines and procedures, reducing student concerns about starting kindergarten, and conducting pre-screening assessments.

The Advanced Placement Prep Camp is a program designed for students that will be taking Advanced Placement coursework for the first time during the 2017 – 2018 school year.  Students will engage in activities that will prepare them to succeed in rigorous coursework.  Study strategies, time management strategies, and managing stress are some of the topics that will be covered during the camps.
