Weather Guidelines

Snow Closure Procedures
Predicting weather and road conditions is a challenge, particularly in a district with nearly 150 square miles. The safety of each of our nearly 18,000 students is our priority when making decisions regarding delays and closures.

Cold Weather Procedures
It is the District’s policy that during cold weather, the decision for outside recess will be based on weather; factors such as wind chill, snow, rain, cloud cover, wind, etc. will determine whether or not it will be beneficial for children to go outside. If the air temperature and/or wind chill is 20° F - 15° F, then outdoor recess will be limited to ten minutes. If the air temperature and/or wind chill is below 15° F then only indoor recess will be held.

Extremely cold weather can be very dangerous. Parents and guardians should be certain that their children are appropriately clothed with mittens, hats, coats, etc., so they can be comfortable both inside and outside. Most days your student is going outside for some period of time either at recess or traveling to/from school.

Heat Advisory Procedures for Elementary

Parents are asked to take special precautions on extremely hot days including dressing children in lightweight clothing, limiting outdoor activity and drinking plenty of fluids.

Heat Advisory Procedures for Secondary

The Francis Howell School District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students at school and while participating in activities and athletics. Consistent with this commitment, the District follows certain procedures when a heat advisory is issued.
